In late August, United Airlines announced a historic international route expansion that will add 10 new destinations once the rollout is complete.

According to a press release, the carrier will begin launching nonstop service to 10 new international destinations across Europe and Asia, beginning in March 2027. The new additions to its network include Catania (Sicily) and Olbia (Sardinia), Italy; Ibiza and Valencia, Spain; Marseille and Toulouse, France; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; Okinawa, Japan; and Terceira, Portugal. When the routes launch, the airline projects it will be the only US-based carrier to fly to eight of those destinations.

Most of the new destinations will depart from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). However, the Okinawa route will leave from San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Toulouse will depart from Dulles International Airport (IAD) in the Greater Washington, D.C. area.

On the same day the airline announced its historic destination expansion, United also debuted the ‘Born to Explore’ A321XLR, its newest international aircraft. The plane will fly passengers on select domestic routes starting this month, and begin globetrotting internationally on December 1. Then, in summer 2027, its routes will begin including some of United’s aforementioned new destinations. Upgraded Economy Plus seats and a snack bar in the Economy cabin are what to expect on the new plane.

United’s International Network Keeps Getting Bigger

United noted that all its new routes are “subject to government approval.” That said, the carrier also said, “Tickets are available for sale” on its website and app.

The airline has added almost 60 new international destinations to its network within the past decade. Some of the recently announced new routes will depart from the U.S., up to four times weekly. Additionally, the announcement of these 10 new destinations is the largest route network expansion at a single time in the company’s history.

“We aim to have a destination on our route map for every traveler, at every stage of their lives. Whether it’s a business trip, a dream honeymoon, a bucket-list adventure, or a trip home to see family, we’re making the world feel smaller and connecting cultures at a scale no other airline in the world can match,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances. “We’ve added flights to nearly 60 new international cities in the last decade, building a global network with the breadth and reach to set travel trends and inspire even the most discerning travelers to discover somewhere new. When someone visits our website or app to start planning a trip, they’ll be amazed by where United can take them.”
