5 Top Summer Events Where You Can Sink Into Black Joy And Culture
Melanated Campout — Cordele, Georgia
Date: September 25 – 27
This 21+ friendly event is a warm, welcoming, community-building Black summer camp experience. And if you’ve never been to summer camp before, or you’re just not the outdoorsy type, there will still be accommodation types (like glamping) and many activities that may pique your interest.
What makes this festival stand out is how much it aims to connect its attendees, so that they come as campers and leave as “cousins.” Expect a unique experience that includes line dancing, live music, a comedy show, fishing, golfing, and campfire chats with new friends and familiar faces. Be prepared for competition as well, as there will be water gun and lip-syncing battles.
Black: A Festival of Joy — Indianapolis, Indiana
Date: Saturday, July 11, 2026
This free, family-friendly one-day festival celebrates and brings together Indiana’s Black community with live music, entertainment, DJs, dancing. Of the much more that attendees can anticipate are food, interactive art, and wellness areas. The festival is an amazing opportunity to support Indy’s Black entrepreneurs and leaders. The event also has a charitable component, as organizers award select local Black-led organizations and Black-owned businesses with funds to support their work.
The Brownmill Block Party — Newark, New Jersey
Date: TBD
The BrownMill Block Party is a major, fun-filled one-day June affair where the whole family can sink into the culture. It’s about celebrating local residents and “the spirit of Newark.” The day will include a variety of exclusive pop-ups and experiences, art installations, music, clothing, and food vendors. It’ll be a bustling party atmosphere with lots of music. Also, be ready to show off your skills in the roller skating rink.
Dear Summer Festival — Multiple locations
Dates: Multiple throughout the summer
New York City, Atlanta, Miami, Washington, D.C., and Houston — you won’t want to miss the Dear Summer Festival when it comes to you. You’ll definitely want this on your social calendar if you like to party and mingle. Black joy and HBCU alumni will be showing out in full display. The adults-only traveling festival — founded by HBCU grads — describes itself as a “summer homecoming” that brings together other “HBCU alumni, Greek organizations, creatives, entertainers, and influencers.”
Black Food & Wine Experience — Napa Valley, California
Dates: June 18 – 21
There’s no denying that gathering over food and drinks is a large part of our joy. The Black Food And Wine Experience — this year celebrating its ninth edition — is a testament to that.
Thrown by Aminah Robinson-Briscoe, aka Chef Mimi, the event opens the door to and celebrates the Black culinary and beverage industries’ best offerings. Expect wine tastings (of course), mixologist-crafted drinks, an elevated brunch social, and wellness experiences. There will be music, vendors, and unique events throughout the four-day culinary and culture-focused experience.
