Many American travelers around the globe have faced travel disruptions in recent weeks. But when it comes to passport processing times in 2026, Americans don’t have to worry about delays. At least not yet.

According to the State Department, passport processing times are currently at their standard. The wait time is four to six weeks for routine application processing and two to three weeks for expedited applications. People who need a passport urgently processed and have proof of international travel within two weeks can make an appointment online for a visit to a nearby passport agency, where they’ll be assisted. Regarding the latter, a traveler will first have to use the Online Passport Appointment System to determine whether they are eligible for an agency visit. Those centers provide services by appointment only.

Application processing and mailing times add to the overall wait time for a new passport. As the State Department makes clear, “It may take two weeks for your application to get to us, and two weeks for you to get your passport after we mail it.” For applications within a routine time frame, travelers may expect their new passport in 8 to 10 weeks total. That’s an estimate, as generally, passport processing times are subject to change.

How Can I Expedite My Passport Application?

In addition to paying a $60 fee for expedited passport application processing, travelers can also pay to have their information mailed to and from the State Department at a faster rate. The United States Postal Service’s Priority Mail can get your information to the Department quickly. Additionally, one- to three-day delivery ($22.50) will speed up the return of your new or renewed passport.

Private passport expeditors, couriers, and agencies may offer short wait times. However, as mentioned, if urgent travel is required within a short timeframe, travelers may be eligible to visit a passport agency to obtain their documentation that same day.

Also, renewing a passport online can be completed in around 10 minutes.

The State Department implores applicants to always ensure they’re applying through the organization’s official website, not an online scam.

“Passport processing times remain low if you need to apply or renew. Most adult U.S. passport holders can renew entirely online,” the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs stated in a November 2025 Facebook post. One important tip — be sure to ONLY apply through the official site (travel.state.gov/renewonline) to avoid being scammed into paying more or sharing your personal information with third-party sites. If a passport site ends in ‘.com’ or ‘.org’ it is NOT the official site. Always look for ‘.gov’ in the URL before starting your application.”
